What Is Craniosacral Therapy?
Craniosacral Therapy (CST) is a profound light touch, non-invasive, cutting edge manual modality that releases tensional strain patterns and restrictions deep in the body, thus facilitating the body’s innate ability to self- correct and heal.
CST was developed by Osteopathic Physician, John E. Upledger after extensive clinical research at Michigan State University. Established in 1985, Upledger Institute International has trained more than 125,000 therapists worldwide and offers more than 600 courses in 50 countries.
CST is particularly effective for conditions such as chronic pain, headaches and migraines, stress and tension-related disorders, issues related to the central nervous system, recovering from surgeries or concussion, scar tissue release, motor vehicle incidents and other traumas.
CST is a modality that promotes fluid exchange throughout all of our tissues, which contributes to facilitating the innate ability of the body to recover, self-correct and heal therefore improving general immune function and increasing vitality to the systems.
What Conditions Can Be Helped With Craniosacral Therapy?
Few structures have as much influence over the body’s ability to function properly as the brain and spinal cord that make up the central nervous system. And few systems have a much impact on the central nervous system as the craniosacral system – the membranes and fluid that surround, protect and nourish the brain and spinal cord. Every day your body endures stresses and strains, and your structures work to compensate for them. Unfortunately, these changes often cause body tissues to tighten and distort the craniosacral system, which can then cause tension to form around the brain and spinal cord.
The result is a barrier to the healthy performance of the central nervous system, and potentially every other system in interacts with. Fortunately, such restrictions can be detected and corrected using this light touch technique that interfaces (meets and communicates) with them throughout the entire body. This offers a global and comprehensive approach that focuses on finding the root cause of dysfunction, chronic pain or illness, rather that chasing symptoms.
This modality creates a way to enhance the body’s ability to self-correct, release, stabilize and heal, thus creating an environment for more optimal functioning of the brain, spinal cord and all other body systems.
how does craniosacral therapy work?
A Craniosacral session takes place in a quiet, private setting. You are lying fully clothed, on a comfortable massage table with fresh linen. Please wear loose, comfortable clothing, preferably not jeans. The therapy is a gentle, hands-on modality using "light touch” that evaluates and “listens to” the body for tension patterns and imbalances. Sessions typically last about 60 to 90 minutes.
Sometimes, circumstances are recalled surrounding a past trauma or injury that caused the body stress. While this doesn’t happen every time, it is perfectly normal and helps he body reverse dysfunction and restore optimal levels of mobility. What is experienced during a CST session is highly individualized. Some say they feel deeply relaxed, while others describe feeling unwinding sensations as the body releases tension, which can be profound.
What Can I Expect During A CST Session?
Just as each individual experiences CST sessions differently, the results can be diverse as well. You may leave in such a relaxed state that you feel like sleeping for hours. Or you may leave full of boundless energy. You may feel a decrease in pain or an increase in function immediately after the session, or the effects may develop gradually over the next few days.
Since CST helps the body resume its natural healing processes, it’s common for your improvements to continue weeks after the session. You may also experience a reorganization phase as your body releases previously held patterns and adapts to a new state of wellness.

Yes, CST is a very gentle and non-invasive therapy. It is considered safe for most people of any age. There are very few situations in which CST is not recommended. They include any condition in which slight variations in intracranial pressure would cause instability, such as acute aneurysm, recent skull fracture and cerebral hemorrhage or other severe bleeding disorder.
If you have any questions about whether these situations apply to you, ask your therapist and seek the advice of your physician before receiving a CST session.

Good question! The intention of CST is to facilitate CHANGE. Most of us have embedded chronic restrictions in our fascia, that may have been there for many years.
If given the opportunity to release, along with the investment of client participation and possible life style changes, a good majority of these restrictions in our bodies can move into a different and refreshed fascial arrangement and hence into a new way of being in the world!

The number of sessions required varies depending on the individual, why you are coming in and your condition. Most people will feel significant changes after one to three sessions. Additional sessions may be required depending on the severity of the problem. For chronic disorders, ongoing weekly, monthly, or bi-monthly treatments might be in order to change embedded patterns to maintain ease and comfort or keep the condition from getting worse.
I recommend trying three to five sessions initially. After that, we can see how you feel. If you feel 100 percent better – then you are off! If you are 50 percent better, you may try a few more sessions. If you feel absolutely no change, which is uncommon, then perhaps Craniosacral Therapy isn’t a fit for you.

Craniosacral Therapy is a holistic modality that takes into consideration how one’s emotional state can affect the physical body and vice versa.
SomatoEmotional Release is an adjunct to Craniosacral Therapy that allows the exploration of the emotional, mental, or spiritual aspects of pain, disease, or dysfunction. If issues of that nature arise while receiving structural bodywork, SomatoEmotional Release can provide a space to facilitate and shed light on emotional/physical relationships.
